Summer Session

June 24 - July 20

Summer session classes are perfect for all dancers, whether just starting out or continuing their study. Age-appropriate exercises provide safe practice of the basic shapes, positions, and postures of classical ballet.

Dancers ages 18 months and up can enroll in our summer term which includes four weeks of classes. Classes for dancers up to age seven are also available on Madison’s East Side at the Madison Youth Arts Center.

Children’s Division

The SMB Children’s Division is led by our experienced, professional faculty who provide each student with an enriching arts education in a supportive and welcoming learning environment using the building blocks of anatomy, geometry, physics, and linguistics. Many classes feature live piano accompaniment, fostering musicality and dynamic movement as students gain body awareness and motor control.

 

Me & My Parent

Ages 18 mo. - 3
One 30 min class per week
$49

Toddlers and a parent or caretaker dance together while focusing on rhythm, movement, music, and fun! Students learn dance movements while developing healthy toddler bodies and coordination. Exercises focus on body awareness, gross motor skills, and self-expression. Children must be at least 18 months old on or before June 24th.

This class is only offered at MYArts.

Creative Movement

Ages 4 - 5
One 45 min class per week
$69

Creative Movement teaches rhythm and coordination through a variety of engaging movement exercises. The curriculum is carefully designed to gently introduce these students to a structured and safe classroom environment, while instilling in them the confidence to imagine and explore. Creative play enhances the development of fine and gross motor skills as children leap, stretch, coordinate, isolate, and move to music. Social skills are developed through activities that reward collaboration and cooperation. Children must be at least 4 years old on or before June 24th.

This class is offered at both locations.

Pre-Ballet

Ages 6 - 7
One 60 min class per week
$89

Pre-Ballet classes teach body alignment, posture, and isometric muscle development, while fostering a love for dance and creative expression. Students also begin learning the ballet vocabulary as part of their introduction to formal ballet training. Children must be at least 6 years old on or before June 24th.

This class is offered at both locations.

School Divison

Base Program

Dancers progress through a curriculum designed to increase and maintain technical skills and build strength with a focus on individual development. The Summer Session Base Program consists of weekly technique classes for Primary I, Primary II, and Intermediate I level dancers. A student’s summer program can be expanded upon with Supplementary Classes. See below for details!

Ages 6 - 7
Two 1 hour 15 minute classes per week
Base tuition $112

This level will consist of second year Pre-Ballet students and first year Level 1 students. Curriculum is focused on Level 1 fundamentals with an emphasis on alignment, rhythm, and positions. Dancers will utilize barre for only a portion of class.

PRIMARY II

Ages 7 - 9
Three 1 hour 30 minute classes per week
Base tuition $135

This level will consist of second year Level 1 students and first year Level 2 students. Majority of class will be spent at the barre learning fundamental technique and building upon previous level concepts.

INTERMEDIATE I

Ages 10 - 13
Three 1 hour 30 minute classes per week
Base tuition $216


This level will consist of second year Level 2 and first year Level 3 students. Fundamental classical steps will be established and built upon. Progression toward more complicated rhythms and steps will be learned with more emphasis on center work.

School Division

supplementary Classes

Add additional classes to your Base Program to enhance the student’s training and overall experience. These classes are focused on building strength, artistry, and applicable skills for their ballet training. If minimum enrollment is not met, classes may be cancelled.

Ages 6 - 8
One 1 hour class per week

This class focuses on improving a dancer’s strength, flexibility, and endurance. Pilates and Yoga elements are incorporated in this cross training class specifically designed for dancers.

  • Same as Ballet Technique
    Hair may be loosened from bun as required for use of floor

Character I

 

Ages 9 - 13
One 1 hour class per week
$40

Character class consists of stylized dance based on folk and national dances from across Europe and the continent, within the context of classical ballet. Introduction to pantomime commonly used to classical ballets. Dancers will work at the barre and with combinations in the center experiencing artistry and musicality found at the core of these techniques.

  • Same as Ballet Technique
    Character shoes and skirt are highly recommended and preferred

contemporary/ modern I

Ages 7 - 9
One 1 hour 30 minute class per week
$55

Contemporary I is designed for Primary II dancers completely new to this style. This class introduces students to floor work, quick directional changes, fluid progressions, counter balances, and sustained positions. The goal of a contemporary dance class is to prepare a dancer’s body for a wide range of movement possibilities.

Contemporary/ modern II

Ages 10 - 13
One 1 hour 30 minute class per week

Designed for Intermediate I dancers or dancers who have taken at least one year of contemporary/modern. This curriculum will delve into more complex movement and floor work.

    Barefoot or socks

Jazz I

Ages 7 - 9
One 1 hour 30 minute class per week
$55

Students will experience a stylized class to enhance the dancer’s self-expression, adaptability, and joy. The warmup, across-the-floor series, and center choreography will focus on movement dynamics, alignment, musicality, technical accuracy, clarity, transitions, and expressive and powerful movement.

  • At discretion of Teacher:
    Hair may be in ponytail
    Athletic form-fitting clothing
    Socks or Jazz shoes

JAZZ II

Ages 10 - 13
One 1 hour 30 minute class per week
$55

Designed for Intermediate I dancers or dancers who have taken at least one year of Jazz or similar styles. Emphasis will be placed on choreography, precision, and dynamics.

  • At discretion of Teacher:
    Hair may be in ponytail
    Athletic form-fitting clothing
    Socks or Jazz shoes
