Richard Walters

Rehearsal Director, School Principal

Richard Walters is a dancer, choreographer and educator. He received his early training in Western New York before attending the University of North Carolina School of the Arts under the direction of Ethan Stiefel.

Richard has performed nationally and internationally with companies including Hubbard Street 2, Oklahoma City Ballet, Amy Seiwert’s Imagery, BalletX and Dance Lab New York. Performing works by choreographers such as Alejandro Cerrudo, Penny Saunders, Nacho Duato, Ma Cong, Twyla Tharp, Nicolo Fonte, Cayetano Soto and many others. His performance work also extends to screen, appearing in Violet Sands’ "No Matter What" music video and numerous dance films showcased at festivals including ADF’s Movies by Movers, Virtual Pathways Dance Festival, and the 92Y Mobile Dance Film Festival.

As a choreographer, Richard received his first commission in 2014 for SUNY Brockport’s The Duets Project. He has since created original works for Hudson Ballet Theater, Lamondance (CA), and co-developed projects with Dance//Novella. In 2023, he was selected as a recipient of the UNCSA Choreographic Initiative.

Currently serving as Rehearsal Director and School Principal at Madison Ballet, Richard has choreographed five original works for the company and leads development across school programs. His recent professional development includes the 2025 Pacific Northwest Ballet Teaching Seminar.
