A native of Spooner, Wisconsin, Gretchen Bourg has spent her career in the dance world moving from dancer to teacher to administrative leader, serving as Madison Ballet’s General Manager since September 2011. Ms. Bourg brings over 15 years of experience as a business manager, community leader, educator and performer to Madison Ballet.
As General Manager of Madison Ballet, Ms. Bourg oversees the operations of the company dancers, education and outreach programs, the School of Madison Ballet, administrative and production staff and program faculty, as well as having oversight of the company's $1.3 million budget.
She was appointed General Manager of Madison Ballet in 2011, after 5 years as Education & Outreach Coordinator and Registrar for the School of Madison Ballet. Under her leadership, Ms. Bourg has expanded the organization’s outreach from its roots in area Headstart classrooms to a thriving series of programs touching the lives of over 7,500 individuals each year. The School of Madison Ballet, which opened its doors in 2005, now enrolls over 500 students annually. An engaging educator, Ms. Bourg conducted dance and movement workshops throughout the community, fostering ties with other arts and service organizations throughout the Madison area.
Ms. Bourg received a BS in Arts Education from the University of Wisconsin in Menonomie and has enjoyed working with young artists throughout her career. She was a staff member at Interlochen Arts Camp in Interlochen, MI, and subsequently relocated to Madison in 1994, where she spent nearly 10 years honing her business skills in the printing industry before joining Madison Ballet.
Ms. Bourg is actively involved in the community. She is on the review panel for the Overture Center’s Tommy Awards and is a Master Teacher with the Overture Center’s Arts Initiative pilot program. Ms. Bourg also teaches Pilates at SMB.
As a performer, Ms. Bourg has performed a number of corps and soloist roles in The Nutcracker, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Cinderella, and Peter Pan. She has also performed repertory pieces for Pure Ballet!, the MSO Grand Viennese Ball and the grand opening festivities for the Overture Center. Ms. Bourg believes her experience as a dancer has given her a unique understanding of the performing arts and its essential role in the community at large.
Ms. Bourg is married to Perry Bourg and the couple resides in Madison with their daughter, Louisianna.
